Nicholas Haddock, Ph.D., Managing DirectorNicholas Haddock has over 15 years of experience in designing usable technology. He is an expert in user interface design and algorithms for text and language processing. This twin expertise, combined with a keen eye for user needs, has produced a series of product and technology innovations.Haddock started his career as a Member of Technical Staff at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Bristol, England. He led the research and development of new approaches to search, natural language processing, and multimodal user interface design. In 1994, he founded and led HP's speech technology program. Anticipating that the Internet and the growth of mobile devices would lead to a vast increase in personal audio recordings, he focused on recorded speech. He led the development of a suite of ground-breaking techniques for visualizing and searching voice recordings, including word-spotting and partial transcription. Haddock then switched to a business role at HP's Home Products Division, and helped steer the Pavilion PC to its leadership position in the consumer PC market. He went on to co-found HP's Consumer Internet Services Division, rolling out a broad suite of new product features and service partnerships, resulting in significant revenue growth. Haddock left HP to became an independent consultant in search technology. He realised first-hand that enterprise professionals were poorly-equiped to find and stay up to date with information buried in documents, emails and incoming news items. He founded Atomic Intelligence to develop simple but powerful technology to meet this need. Haddock holds 4 patents in UI design and language technology. He has authored several published papers, and been an invited participant in many industry forums. He has a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from University of Warwick, and a Ph.D. in Natural Language Processing from University of Edinburgh. |
